Abstract

The Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Jeanette Thirlwell Best Paper Award for 2018 has been awarded to Dr Thomas Painter and colleagues from the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Adelaide Medical School, University of Adelaide, South Australia, for their paper “Intravenous tranexamic acid and lower limb arthroplasty—a randomised controlled feasibility study”, published in the July 2018 issue. 1
The 2018 Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Junior Investigator Award has been awarded to Dr Patrick Tan of the Royal Melbourne and Royal Women's Hospitals, Melbourne, Victoria for “High flow humidified nasal oxygen in pregnant women”, published in the January 2018 issue. 2
The origin, history and judging of both of these awards has recently been discussed in detail for those who might be interested. 3
In addition, and as also mentioned in this year’s History Supplement, the History of Anaesthesia Library, Museum and Archives (HALMA) Committee of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists’ Biennial History Award for papers published in 2017/18 has been awarded to Michael Cooper, Anna Gebels, Richard Bailey and David Whish for their paper “Unusual partnerships: The Corfe–McMurdie anaesthetic inhaler of 1918 and the 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station” published in the 2018 Anaesthesia and Intensive Care History Supplement.
On behalf of both the Journal and the Society, we also offer our particular congratulations to those same authors, their paper having additionally and independently been awarded the 2019 David Zuck Memorial Prize of the History of Anaesthesia Society (UK) for 2018's best journal article on the history of anaesthesia. 4 , 5 This award is a great honour for both the authors and for the Journal, and we are delighted.
