Kathy O'Donnell argues that the campaign to defend miners' jobs and communities can be strengthened by elaborating the economic case for the coal industry. She examines the NCB's accounting procedures and the State's policy towards the industry since nationalisation. She argues that coal should play a central part in meeting Britain's energy needs in the 1980s and beyond.
