Abstract
The chronology of the kingdoms of Judah and Israel has been highly controversial, and remains so today. The genealogy of the kings of Judah, on the other hand, has generally been accepted without demur. Only the parentage of Athaliah has been seriously debated. Nevertheless, serious issues are evident in the data. Notable are two relationships: that of Jehoram and Ahaziah, and that of Ahaz and Hezekiah. Their ages and lengths of reign, even considering alternatives suggested by many commentators, plus additional data given in Kings and Chronicles about their fami lies, strongly suggest that these are not father-son pairs but brothers or half-brothers.
