■ The split in Marxism between stagism and combined and uneven development is reviewed through examination of the writings of Karl Kautsky and Leon Trotsky. Based on the premise that strict stagism is a flawed Marxism, the theory of the Neolithic of the Marxist archaeologist V.G. Childe is scrutinized and redeveloped. It is argued that the resulting theory provides a better starting point for analyzing the Neolithic period than do currently popular approaches.
