Abstract
A description of the range of environmental control units (ECUs) available in the United Kingdom is presented. The ECUs discussed include the Steeper SEC1B, the Possum PSU6 and Home Control range, the GEWA range, the James, the TASH Relax, the Tetravox, and Ridley's Switch-a-Switch System. Studies indicate that people with high tetraplegia who use an ECU maintain a more independent level of activity and show an improved relationship with their family, personal assistants and other people. Points to consider when assisting a person in selecting an ECU are listed. Objective assessments and demonstrations are essential if patients with a tetraplegic spinal cord injury are to achieve the maximum benefit of technical equipment, such as computers and ECUs.
