Abstract
A custom-moulded, low cost, lightweight, well ventilated, low temperature thermoplastic thoracolumbar spinal orthosis (TLSO) is described with variations and applications. The study comprised 44 patients: 50% had spinal fractures, between T10 and L2; 20% had osteoporosis of the spine; 18% had undergone corrective scoliosis following a Harrington rod procedure; 11% had spinal fusion and Hartshill rectangle fixation; and in one case the brace was used to correct a developing protruding sternum. The results indicate that the TLSO may be used to reduce pain and that it is rigid enough to maintain posture and aid internal fixation.
