Abstract
The concept of ‘Reading for Pleasure’ arose from work undertaken as a librarian in an educational setting. This idea was then transferred to work being undertaken in a clinical area, where clients with problems relating to mental illness formed a group who were encouraged to use literature in their care environment. The outcome of this group was a very positive one, experiences being related in the article. The selection of material for use is discussed and the criteria explained. An attempt is made to assess the therapeutic contribution of the group and the potential benefits conferred by reading fiction. Future possibilities are sketched.
