Abstract
Few guidelines exist for the accommodation and therapy requirements of a psychiatric day hospital for inpatients. The occupational therapy needs of the inpatient population of a 150-bed district general hospital mental illness unit were assessed and the accommodation required estimated. They demonstrated a grossly inadequate provision of ADL space, that the day hospital was not where most inpatients spent their daytime and that a large proportion of the rehabilitation needs were not being met.
