Abstract
This article describes a 2 1/2-year play-therapy relationship with an emotionally disturbed child and the involvement of his adoptive mother. It is hoped that it shows how necessary long-term therapy is for some very disturbed and damaged children, and how one mother came to experience the symbolic birth of her adopted child. A secure attachment between mother and child apparently became established and the beginnings of healing took place.
