This article is a case study of an occupational therapist who has participated in a retainer scheme since March 1987. The main benefit of this scheme to the occupational therapy manager involved is in the provision of continuity of service during periods of staff absence. Participating occupational therapists are enabled to extend their clinical experience and remain in touch with the profession during a career break while their children are young.
