Abstract
The question of bulimia as an illness is discussed. The inclusion of bulimia in the DSM III classification is examined and the problems of the different authors' interpretation of its points are highlighted. The ‘measures’ used in assessing bulimia are reported. The problem of identifying the condition is examined through the use of surveys, sampling, interviews and questionnaires.
