Abstract
This study seeks to identify factors that are important to both staff and students who are involved in teaching or learning the craft-orientated practical skills. The findings indicate that: Students' concerns are often quite different from the concerns of those who teach; students vary from one another as to the primary motivating factors that influence their learning; and there is a difference in attitudes towards the nature of these classes between the various lecturers. It is proposed that such discrepancies should be discussed openly and clarified so that there may be a shared understanding between all staff and students.
