This article aims to outline the main functions of social education centres (formerly called adult training centres), and includes observations made during visits to three centres in Warwickshire. Two contrasting philosophies emerged concerning contract work procurement. Whilst one centre made extensive use of such schemes, the other centres felt that contract work had a lower priority in the running of student training programmes.
