The aim of the literature review was to determine whether the visibility of scarring affects the psychosocial adaptation of adult patients with severe burn injuries. It was found that a large majority of people manage to adjust very well and can return to their previous way of life; and that this adjustment is dependent more on social support and the personality of the individual than on the severity or visibility of physical deformities.
