Abstract
This article is based on a handout given to patients following total hip replacement. It is intended to supplement the information provided by members of the rehabilitation team. One problem which may arise from the use of handouts is that the information and instructions given may differ in some way from that provided by members of staff. However, potential misunderstandings can be avoided if the communication between staff members is good, and if it is made clear to the patient that the handout presents general guidelines which may be overruled in individual cases.
