Abstract
This paper describes the development in Oxford of a day centre specifically for young adults who suffer from severe psychiatric illnesses, the so-called ‘new chronically mentally ill’. The centre was founded by the Oxford Mental Health Association (OMHA), an independent charity affiliated to MIND. OMHA continues to manage the centre in liaison with members of the multidisciplinary Oxfordshire Psychiatric Rehabilitation Service. The volunteer staff and the ‘patient’ members of the centre have evolved a nonintrusive but supportive style of working together.
