Abstract
The author discusses the origins, background and context of counselling, and shows how its roots differ from those of the other main psychological helping sources. She then expands on one particular way of working by looking in more detail at the work of Carl Rogers, the American psychologist, educator and therapist, since it is his approach that she is most committed to in her own counselling practice. It was not possible to explore in detail the actual process of counselling or the training of counsellors, nor to enlarge at length on the application of counselling to particular situations such as crises or specific personal problems. For these reasons, she has called this article an introduction to counselling.
