This article looks at the institutionalized and dependent patient in a day hospital setting. It suggests characteristics which may be observed in such patients and ways in which the environment and routine may have contributed to encouraging set patterns of behaviour with detrimental effect. The programme used at Purley Day Hospital shows how the individual needs of patients are taken into consideration to encourage self-confidence and independence.
