Abstract
This article discusses some of the problems encountered during the author's work on the rehabilitation team at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital. The facilities there include a ladder of transistional care, ranging from the token economy ward to group games within the hospital and group tenancies for patients discharged to day care (in all, 97 beds). Gradual reduction in supervision is accompanied by increased demands in the work situation.
The occupational therapist is responsible for planning work programmes and advising on other aspects of care, organising individual assessments and programmes as required.
