With You,Not against You: Applying Motivational Interviewing to Occupational Therapy in Anorexia Nervosa

Abstract

Anorexia nervosa is a complex condition which can evoke a range of challenges for the occupational therapist. Conflicts can often arise from the differing viewpoints of client and therapist and may inhibit the client's continuing engagement in treatment and the process of change. Motivational interviewing is an approach that allows the occupational therapist to take a side-by-side stance with the client and is increasingly advocated in working with this client group. This paper explores the practice of occupational therapy within an eating disorders service and discusses the application of motivational interviewing to working with people with anorexia nervosa.
