Abstract
Viscometry, pH-metry and IR spectroscopy were used to investigate the interaction of polyacrylic and polymethacrylic acids with poly-N-vinylcaprolactam in aqueous solution. It was shown that, with poly-N-vinylcaprolactam, poly acids form an interpolymer complex of equimolar composition in terms of base mole units. Complexing is due to the hydrogen bonds between undissociated carboxyl groups of polyacids and oxygen atoms of amide groups in the poly-N-vinylcaprolactam. Complexes of poly acids with poly-N-vinylcaprolactam are more stable than complexes between the same poly acids and poly-N-vinylpyrrolidone on account of stronger hydrophobic interaction in the former case.
