Abstract
The sharply increased number of drug-abusing detainees in Dutch penitentiaries has led to a multiformity in treatment. No uniform assessment instruments have been developed. In this study the Addiction Severity Index for penitentiaries was researched. The instrument offers a wide range of applications including treatment planning, referral decisions and policy-making. The reliability and validity of the ASI was tested with 128 inmates; the internal consistency is good. The ASI problem areas are independent from each other. The ASI produces valid severity ratings and has a psychiatric subscale and its validity is moderately good.
