Abstract
This exploratory study focuses on elderly offenders on probation. It deals with the characteristics of elderly probationers, the issues connected with their handling by the criminal justice system in general, and the probation in particular. Among other variables the study shows that there are relatively few elderly people on probation; more than half of them have a previous record; among males a large percent committed sex related offenses; generally their educational level is low; most have a manual or semi-skilled occupational background; about one-third of them have a very low income; and many have health problems.
