Abstract
This paper presents an approach for demonstrating the interdependent and integrated nature of the engineering design process. The approach emphasizes the varied and multi-disciplinary nature of design so that students are aware of the importance and application of other course material. As an example, an air duct system is considered from its initial design through to its construction. This also provides an opportunity for students to understand the basic theory of surface development in sheet metal design and to carry out finite element (FE) stress analysis and air flow simulation in the first year of their undergraduate studies. The laboratory project-based approach is intended to encourage student interest and enthusiasm in integrated design.
