The examination of a washing machine fill valve and subsequent testing and analysis are undertaken as a first fluid mechanics laboratory task. A primary intention in doing this is to put into perspective the role of a fluids engineer at a time in the students career when very little fluid mechanics technology is understood and when analytical lecture content is generally held to occupy too large a proportion of a student's attention in this area.
