The aim of exergy analysis is to locate and evaluate the effects of thermodynamic irreversibility in process plant. When discussing the results of an exergy balance, it is usual to refer to the discrepancy between the exergetic inputs and outputs as a ‘loss’. The author argues that the use of the word loss in this context is not appropriate, and suggests that the descriptive term ‘exergy overhead’ is to be preferred.
