Enhancing engineering education through a combined flipped classroom and team-based learning approach with team leaders

Abstract

This paper presents a novel approach to engineering education that integrates the Flipped Classroom (FC) model with Team-Based Learning (TBL) and leverages team leaders to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. The combined approach addresses the challenges of large class sizes and fosters deeper understanding of complex engineering concepts. The problem of large student numbers is common in developing countries where there is a shortage of lecturers and facilities that do not meet training needs but have not received much research attention. Through a structured process that includes pre-class preparation, team-based activities, and focused communication with group leaders, this method promotes active learning, collaboration, and accountability among students. The study outlines the implementation of this approach in engineering courses, evaluates its effectiveness, and discusses potential benefits and challenges. The results from two Design of Experiment and Introduction to Engineering courses showed that this newly method had good effectiveness. Therefore, the proposed method has the potential to be applied to technology training, especially in developing countries.
