2 Michael Menson died in February 1997 after having been set alight by a racist gang. Ricky Reel was found dead in the river Thames, hours after a racist attack on him and a group of friends in October 1997. Akofa Hodasi was found hanged from a tree three days after a racial attack in which a friend was stabbed, in April 1998. Harold McGowan (July 1999) and his nephew Jason (December 1999) were both found hanged in highly suspicious circumstances. Police initially treated both deaths as suicides, refusing to consider allegations of racism.

2 Many Slovak Roma were recruited to work in the Czech industrial lands left empty after the post-war expulsion of the Sudeten Germans. The Badzo family, for instance, worked and had their younger children in the Czech town of Kladno before returning to Michalovce. The vast majority of the 1997 Roma exodus to Britain came from these two linked towns from the western and eastern borders of former Czechoslovakia.
