Abstract
We seek to demonstrate that interpretative and quantitative approaches can be productively integrated in science studies research. We have developed techniques of citation and cocitation analysis which are sufficiently fine-grained to test a pre-existing interpretative analysis of the establishment of the `charm' hypothesis in high-energy physics. We present our quantitative data here and argue that they support, strengthen and extend the prior interpretation of this episode.
