Abstract
[The papers in this Theme Section were originally presented as case studies at a Workshop on `Federal Funding and Knowledge Growth'. At the Workshop, several discussants were given the opportunity to comment on the papers as a group, evaluating the potential of studies of this kind to illuminate science policy issues, and suggesting further topics for research. Condensed versions of their comments appear here, with the exception of Daniel Sullivan's, which are excerpted in my Introduction to the Section (11-12). I have added Notes. SEC.]
