Abstract
It is a pleasure to engage with Fred Halliday, John Hobson and Linda Weiss, each of whom has kind words to say about my work. In this rejoinder, I pay particular attention to two critiques: the first, made by Halliday and Hobson, that I have overplayed the hand of IR Realism in my work; and the second, made by Hobson alone, that my account of the rise of the West is unbalanced by dint of its Eurocentrism. Needless to say, I reject both charges. However, I do accept that, to date, I have not provided much in the way of general theoretical statements about international relations — here I begin this task, with a bare-bones explanation of why Europeans have been so warlike and imperialistic when compared to other multi-state systems.
