Abstract
Twenty undergraduate and graduate music majors attempted to identify cross-rhythmic patterns generated from two melodies played simultaneously. Each melody consisted of randomly generated non repeating dodecaphonic tone rows. Thirteen different cross-rhythms were tested. The rate of correct identification was inversely related to the number of non-coincident pitches per measure that were generated by the two constituent melodies. Identification accuracy was unaffected by whether the higher-pitched melody was faster or slower than the lower-pitched melody. Accuracy was also unrelated to pitch distance between the melodies and to amount of loudness differeltiation between the melodies.
