The available literature on congenital cardiac anomalies in the horse has been reviewed. Five additional cases have been described: two of right atrio-ventricular (tricuspid) atresia with subaortic septal defect and patent foramen ovale, one of congenital absence of the aortic origin of the left coronary artery, one of persistent truncus arteriosus, and one of persistent ductus arteriosus.
Four of these cases (exception: persistent truncus arteriosus) have not been previously described in the horse, and represent the only four cardiac anomalies observed in an autopsy series of approximately 2,500 horses, foals and equine fetuses.
