Abstract

Dear Editor:
This worthy contribution to improve our nomenclature was most enjoyable to read. However, such dedication by the authors disappeared with the appearance of “4-legged or 2-legged animals.” The leg is the region between the stifle and the tarsus. The quadruped walks with 4 limbs, 2 thoracic and 2 pelvic. We bipeds walk with 2 pelvic limbs, a component of which is the leg or crus. In this group of august authors, I can only apologize for my failure to educate Don Meuten appropriately. Any attempt to gain the cooperation of our colleagues in the use of medical terms is to be applauded. Maybe this introduction for consistency in our use of correct terminology will initiate a more expansive examination of the terms commonly used by pathologists. The anatomists have worked at this for many years resulting at the present with the publication of the fifth edition of the Nomina Anatomica Veterinaria in 2005.
