Abstract

The combined 62nd and 46th Annual Meetings of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) and the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology will be held in Nashville, Tennessee, on December 3–7, 2011. In this issue of Veterinary Pathology, we will, for the second year, publish abstracts for the annual meeting online. Online publication provides greater visibility and rapid open access to all abstracts. Our abstract submissions this year demonstrate that Veterinary Pathology is truly a global discipline. Our submissions come from all over the world, and there are many examples of international collaborations with ACVP members. Online publication and open access to our abstracts is one way that we will continue to build and foster international relationships. We welcome all feedback regarding the online format and how it is working for everyone.
With our meeting in Nashville quickly approaching, Focused Scientific Session Committees have been working in the background reviewing abstracts and organizing a program that will spark interest and provide learning opportunities for all members of our college. Meeting attendees will have the opportunity to interact with scientists with expertise broadly representing the fields of biomedical research and diagnostic investigation. Contributions range in subject matter from human and animal cancer research, wildlife diseases, animal models of disease, infectious disease studies, naturally occurring diseases, biomarker development, and drug discovery to discussions on education of future pathologists. This work will be presented in the form of posters and oral presentations. Posters will be on display throughout the meeting, but we have designated the Opening Reception on Saturday evening as our Focused Poster Session, where we ask presenters to be present at the posters. The Focused Poster Session is always a big hit because it offers a dedicated time to talk pathology and science with colleagues. In addition to the poster sessions, abstracts will be presented in the format of oral presentations in the Focused Scientific Sessions, which include clinical pathology, diagnostic pathology, education, experimental disease, industrial and toxicologic pathology, and natural disease. The Focused Scientific Session Committees listed below are made up of hardworking individuals who volunteer time to organize these programs. We appreciate all time and effort these individuals contribute to keep our annual program cutting-edge and intellectually stimulating for our college.
This is my first year in the role of Focused Scientific Session Coordinator and Abstract Editor. I would like to welcome Shelley Newman into the role of Co-coordinator and Awards Chair. We have had a great year so far working with the Focused Scientific Session Committees and all the contributors. We would like to say thanks to everyone who submitted abstracts to the meeting because you make this part of the program possible. We encourage everyone to continue to submit abstracts and volunteer on the Focused Scientific Committee so that the Focused Scientific Sessions continue to reflect the breadth and depth of the ACVP.
