Abstract

One of the problems with learning about pathological features in laboratory mice is accessing the older literature, particularly textbooks. This is difficult given that many of these valuable resources are out of print. To address this specific need, we have initiated the process of making these books available electronically with free access to all. This involves obtaining copyright releases from the publishers and authors, scanning the books, and putting them online through the Mouse Genome Informatics Database (MGI; http://www.informatics.jax.org/). The first mouse pathology textbook to be made available in this format is the classic by Drs C. H. Frith and J. M. Ward, Color Atlas of Neoplasic and Non-neoplastic Lesions in Aging Mice, Elsevier, 1988. It can now be accessed directly (http://www.informatics.jax.org/frithbook) or by going to the MGI home page: look on the dark blue tool bar to the third header, More Resources, and the third topic from the top lists Online Books. We are in the process of obtaining permissions to do this on other books of importance to pathologists working with laboratory mice.
