Editor:
I feel moved to point out an omission in the recent Veterinary Pathology
journal editorial (46:563–564, 2009). Jerrold M. Ward, in his editorial “Where
Are Thou, Departments of Veterinary Pathology?” decries the lack of Veterinary Pathology
Departments in American and Canadian veterinary colleges. Dr. Ward states that only two
veterinary colleges have preserved a Department of Pathology, these being the University of
Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine and Iowa State University College of Veterinary
Medicine. I would like to point out that at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine
(WCVM), University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, SK, Canada, we have a Department of
Veterinary Pathology that has been in existence since the founding of the college. The
first graduate student completed a postgraduate program in 1967, two years before the first
WCVM DVM class graduated. We offer MVetSc, MSc, and PhD programs and have trained
pathologists who have served or serve all over the world.
Editor's Response:
The intent of the editorial was to decry the trend. The oversight was inadvertent and we
are heartened to know of this fact, but the trend is clear.
