Abstract
High-dose chemotherapy for the treatment of breast cancer is an area of active research. However, almost 20 years after the first reports of the application of this form of therapy to breast cancer, the indications for treatment, the efficacy of this form of therapy compared with standard chemotherapy or to doseintensive scheduling of chemotherapy, and the patients to whom it should be offered, remain areas of intense debate and controversy. We offer a brief review on the questions that remain to be answered and an assessment of the current state of knowledge in the field.
