Abstract
Bayes’ theorem is a useful mathematical and statistical tool for calculating the probability of a given diagnosis from the clinical signs and their incidence in the various diagnoses considered. The theorem is highly pertinent to mammography, especially in mass screening, which calls for a simple unequivocal method of evaluating clinical and mammographic evidence. The incidence of 22 clinical and mammographic signs has been studied in 124 subjects: in 41 of them a malignant tumor was histologically proven, in the remainder histologically excluded.
