Abstract
A clinicostatistical analysis was made of all histologically proven cases of lymphosarcoma (104) and reticulosarcoma (247), treated by radiotherapy from 1950 to 1961 at the National Cancer Institute and the Institute of Radiology of the University of Milano. On the basis of these data, clinical similarities and dissimilarities between lymphosarcoma and reticulosarcoma are set forth. Reticulosarcoma is more frequent than lymphosarcoma (2.37: 1) and affects younger subjects (50% → 41–60% yrs against 51 – 70 yrs). The sex ratio is almost the same. Lymphosarcoma arises prevailingly in lymph nodes (60%), but in a fair number of cases (23%) the primary tumor was found to occur in Waldeyer's ring. For reticulosarcoma the primary site is mostly the pharynx (48.6 %), being found in the lymph nodes in the 27.9 % only. The percentages by stage, irradiation technique and dose are similar in the two tumor types. The curves of total and partial survival by age and sex, site of occurrence, clinical stage, and techniques of the radiation therapy are roughly the same.
