Abstract
In 61 out of 170 patients with fibrosarcoma, hospitalized at the National Cancer Institute of Milan in the period between 1928 and 1960, the tumor was localized in the limbs. Forty-six cases, after surgical, radiological or radio-surgical treatment, had a total of 97 recurrences. The mean 5-year survival of the treated and untreated patients was 37.7%. In the surgical treatment, the best results were obtained by the «large muscolar resection technique» which allowed a 5-year survival of 86.5 % as compared with the 35 % obtained by the « enucleo resection technique ». In those cases where the tumor was superficial, a large resection of the cutis and of the underlying fascia seemed to be the most indicated technique.
