Abstract
The results obtained in 378 cases of malignant tumors of the tonsil radiologically treated at the Institute of Radiology of the University and at the Cancer Institute of Milan, are reported. They occurred predominantly in males (297 cases); 60 per cent of the cases were in the sixth and seventh decades of life. Microscopic study was performed in 359 cases: there were 206 squamous-cell carcinomas (57.1%) and 121 malignant lymphomas (33.5%). The gross pathology and the local spread observed are described. The radiologic methods of therapy employed are reported and discussed. The results show a two-year survival of 41.1 per cent and a five-year survival of 32.6 per cent. The five-year survival was of 28.7 per cent for the epithelial tumors and of 37.9 per cent for all the others. The best results were obtained in localized tumors.
