Abstract
Laterocervical tumours showing papilliferous aspect and known as « Laterocervical Aberrant Thyroids » are discussed.
It is referred upon the debated question whether to consider them as embryonal rests in pathological growth, or metastases from tumours of the thyroid gland.
The anatomical and functional differences among thyroid gland, accessory thyroids (or median aberrant thyroids), and lateral aberrant thyroids, are pointed out.
Five cases have been observed in the Pathology Departement of the Cancer Institute in Milan.
A certain differentiation is shown by the cells, so that the degree of malignancy is not always easy to recognise (Sirtori's « D » cells) and owing to the macroscopical and microscopical pictures the conclusion is drawn that these neoformations are to be considered as laterocervical metastases from papilliferous carcinomas of the thyroid gland.
