Effects of Therapeutic Doses of Cimetidine and Oxmetidine on the Parietal Cell Population,Gastric Mucosal Glycoproteins and Surface Gastric Epithelium,in Duodenal Ulcer Patients

Abstract

The histamine H₂-receptor antagonists cimetidine and oxmetidine were administered in a dose of 1 g/day for 4 weeks to fifteen duodenal ulcer patients. Their effects on the parietal cell population, the intracellular mucosal glycoproteins and the surface gastric epithelium were investigated by comparing pre- and post-treatment fundic biopsies. It was found that treatment with either agent had no effect on any of the assessments made.
