The requirements and documentation needed before undertaking clinical trials in thirty-three countries excluding the UK and USA were determined by a questionnaire. There was no clear pattern between countries on the same continent, sharing the same language or in the same economic community. Greater standardization of these requirements is necessary to ensure that worthwhile new drugs reach the patient at the earliest opportunity consistent with careful and adequate investigation.
