Clomipramine (Anafranil) in the Treatment of Obsessional Illnesses and Phobic Anxiety States

Abstract

A method of treating patients suffering from obsessional illnesses and phobic anxiety states by means of large doses of clomipramine given in slow intravenous drips is described. Eighty-five patients are reviewed, with follow-up in every available subject carried out as long as possible. The occurrence of symptom groups is examined, and finally the response to the treatment of the major constellations of the obsessional and phobic anxiety groups is compared. An overall reduction of symptom severity by a factor of about 2.4 for the obsessional group and of about 6 for the phobic anxiety group is demonstrated.
