Sage was contacted by a reader with concerns about the data in the article.
During investigation, Sage also became aware of discrepancies between the author list on the pre-print version of the article and the published version, inconsistencies between the IRB approval date and reported recruitment period and absence of clinical trial registration.
The authors explained that the additional co-authors reflected a long-standing collaboration and provided the data underlying their article. The authors provided the refined data however the randomization could not be independently verified and information supporting the sample size calculation was not available. In addition, they were unable to provide the appropriate ethical approval documentation.
Due to these unresolved concerns that call into question the validity of the findings, the Journal Editor and Sage retract the article.
