Abstract
The central role of marketing in national economic development is emphasized in analytical work which appeared in Western Europe at the end of the Middle Ages. Marketing activity is seen as providing market opportunities, which in turn stimulate factor employment in all sectors of the economy. The import of this literature arises from its focus upon the welfare of the state as a whole, and the derivation of an understanding of marketing in the context of this macro perspective.
