Studies consistently fail to confirm that research increases teaching effectiveness; moreover, critics of academic marketing research doubt its practical value. This article suggests that criteria commonly used to evaluate research productivity for promotion and tenure purposes may be partly to blame for the alleged shortcomings. Potential remedies are offered as well.
