Abstract
This paper discusses several important and not so obvious aspects of student behavior before and after class discussions of case studies. The authors cite specific instructor strategies for encouraging adequate preparation before class both by individuals and study groups. Also, negative aspects of study group such as the ‘group parasite syndrome’ are presented, as well as methods of control. Similarly, desirable and undesirable forms of post-class behavior are identified. Practical techniques are presented for encouraging students to think about a case after class discussion has ended. The paper concludes with a discussion of “case ethics” and methods of encouraging desirable behavior.
